Textile Masterpieces with Historical Weight

In the Great Hall of Frederiksborg, visitors are invited to explore impressive textile artworks. These large-scale tapestries are not only grand visual narratives of Danish history, but also powerful symbols of female initiative and innovation. Led by Kristiane Konstantin-Hansen, the tapestries were reimagined and recreated over 28 years, starting around 1900 – a monumental project shaped by women's hands and minds.

The Women Behind the Weaving

These women weren’t just weavers – they were organisers, planners, and collaborators. Working closely with contemporary artists, they pushed the boundaries of both art and society. Modern motifs and unexpected elements, like dandelions in battle scenes, add subtle but bold commentary within the threads.

A Multi-layered Exhibition

The exhibition extends beyond the tapestries, featuring sketches, colour samples, paintings, and photographs. Displayed across the Great Hall and two adjoining rooms, it offers insight into the era’s aesthetics and the pioneering spirit of women in art and craft.

Where Art and Activism Intertwine

“Tapestry – Threads Through Time” is more than an exhibition – it’s an encounter with an era in which women used textiles as a platform for creative expression and social commentary. They wove not only materials, but also ideas, courage, and change.
